Success at the 16th Gymnasiade. Belarusian young athletes clinch 14 medals.

Belarusian pupil-athletes finished their performance at the 16th Gymnasaide and had a safe trip home. Viktor Yakzhik Deputy Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus, Elina Sakalouskaya Deputy Director of the Republican Center of Physical Education and Sports for Pupils and Students as well as athletes’ parents and friends gave a solemn welcome to our sport delegation at the National airport.
It was a pure welcome of triumphants. 22 Belarusian participants delegated to Trabzon gained in total 14 medals — 7 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals. A special attention was given to our young gymnasts. As the most gold medals were on account of the rhythmic gymnastics team.
Deputy Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus stressed that our pupils showed a high level result. The Belarusian team was to overcome the strong opponents from 39 countries of the world. The most successful was the performance of 14-year-old Anastasiya Salos, pupil of the Republican State School of Olympic Reserve. She won 6 medals, including the one in the team tournament in rhythmic gymnastics.
“I’m pleased that our team showed a high level in the international arena”, — summed up Viktor Yakzhik at the press briefing. He also noted that such successes of pupil-athletes confirm the importance of physical education and sport. They popularize the healthy way of life. Therefore the perspective of development of university and school sport in the country will be made the key principals while organizing the curriculum of the upcoming educational year. The Deputy Minister also admitted that during competitions the team was always kept in touch. “The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus together with the Ministry of International Affairs have created a sort of anti-crisis staff and worked on the other variants of delivering our athletes by water in case of necessity. Fortunately, these measures were not needed”, — Viktor Yakzhik said.
Besides, our young athletes were rather dignified concerning the situation in Turkey. They were accompanied by coaches and healthcare workers. So this cohesion and support as well as regular contacts with relatives were named the important conditions of the team’s success.
This is the second time that our Belarusian pupil-athletes take part in the Gymnasiade. This sport forum is organized under the aegis of the International School Sport Federation (ISF) for pupils aged 14-17 years.
This year the program of the Gymnasiade included competitions in 12 disciplines – sport and rhythmic gymnastics, aerobics, swimming, athletics, chess, judo, karate and etc. Belarus participated in 5 sports: swimming, rhythmic gymnastics (team and individual tournaments), athletics (400-m hurdles, javelin throwing), wrestling, judo.
